How To Measure Your Perfect Fit Shutters

Basic instructions are really simple – please only use a steel tape measure (not paper or cloth measuring tapes) and measure in millimeters for better accuracy’

With regards to handles on both windows and doors it is important we check that they are central to the length of side that they are on. Following the measuring instructions below it is always a good double check by putting the handle to it’s open position and run the tape measure along the full length and check the centre of the handle pivot point is in the exact middle of the overall measurement. This is the calculation we will use when manufacturing the unit.

Where a handle does exist we will introduce a ‘rebate’ into either the top or bottom of the Shutter Blind panel or to the stile sides where a left or right side handle exists. This rebate cut out allows the window handle to rotate for opening and closing purposes.

Measure Visible Glass Area Only

  • Measure in 3 places for both the width and the drop, and always use the smallest measurements.
  • Check for any obstructions on the frame, such as window handles or vents, ensuring these are 25mm clear of the glass.
  • If you are unsure if Perfect Fit Shutters are suitable for your window please call us before ordering.
  • Perfect Fit Shutters are not suitable for square framed windows and doors.
  • Perfect Fit Shutters are not suitable for Bi Fold or Sliding Doors.
  • Check for any obstructions, there must be at least 25mm ‘s clearance from the edge of the visible glass edge.
  • Use a credit card to check the bead depth, place the card flush onto the window frame then measure the distance from the glass to the edge of the card, this is our bead depth for the sizing of the shutter bracket.
  • Now measure the distance between the inside edge of the handle to the outer surface of the window frame, if you do not have at least 30mm’s you will need to order a handle rebate ( cut out ).
  • If a rebate is required we need to know the position of the handle, if on the right or left measure from the bottom left of pane of glass to the center point of the handle connected to the window, if the handle is on the bottom measure across from the left hand side of the visible glass to the center of the handle.
  • Please be aware that the tilt control handle cannot be on the same side as a handle rebate.

How To Measure Traditional Plantation Shutters

We like to keep things simple here at DIY Shutters Direct and our shutter measuring guide is no exception. Just follow these easy steps to measure your windows and you can save hundreds if not thousands of pounds on shutters, are you ready to Create Your Dream Home?

Check for Squareness

First of all, you need to check that your recess is pretty much square, making it suitable for your new shutters. All you need to do is measure the recess diagonally from corner to corner on both sides. Then, compare the two measurements.

If the difference is 15mm or less, you’re good to go. If they vary by any more than that, then unfortunately you will not be able to fit the shutter inside the recess without the use of cover beads, in this case call us for advise.

Ready to Measure?

First, decide where your shutters are going to sit. This can be at the front of the recess or inside the recess. Either way, measure at the place you plan to fit your shutters. Do not make any deductions to your measurements before you order, we will advise you before you commit to any measurements, it’s all included in our service.

Front of Recess Fitting

For a front of recess fitting you need to measure at the front of the recess. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom.

Next measure the drop on the right, in the centre and on the left. Write down the smallest measurements, these are the sizes you will use to place an order.

Inside recess fitting

For an inside recess fitting, you can position your shutters anywhere you choose inside the recess, even flush against the window. Just make sure you measure far enough forward so that you avoid any obstructions such as window handles.

Mark where you are going to fit your shutters and measure the width and the drop in 3 places as you would for a front of recess fitting.

Don’t forget to note down the smallest measurements.

Measuring for a Mid Rail

For taller shutters over 1500mm we put in a stylish midrail to give your shutters some support. The great thing about a midrail is you can customise its height so that it looks best. Usually, people tend to position their midrails at the same height as any transom bars on their window.

To position your midrail, simply measure from the bottom of your recess to the midpoint of where you want it to sit. If this is level with your transom bar, measure from the bottom of the recess to the centre of the bar.
